Jackson County High School's track and field program will send 20 athletes to the May 4 Class AAAAAA sectional meet, following the Region 8 championships last week where the girls team finished region runner-up.
Sole Bailey claimed three region championships. The first came in the 100-meter run, an event she set a new school-record time of 12.48 seconds, the second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.54 seconds, and the third in the 300-meter hurdles where she set a new school-record time of 43.92 seconds.
Bailey also qualified for sectionals as a team in the 4x400-meter relay. The team composed of Cassidy Lugo, Kameren Shaw, Talina Thompson and Bailey set a new school-record in the runner-up finish with a time of 4:10.91. The team of Erin O'Brien, Kendall Goetzman, Gabrielle Lee and Thompson also set a new school-record with a third-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:28.31.
Oumy Gaye set a new school-record while also claiming a region championship in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 10.50 inches. Gaye also qualified for sectionals with a fourth-place finish in the high jump and triple jump. Jayln Robinson (200-meter run), O'Brien (1600-meter and 3200-meter run), Kennedy Stone (Long Jump), Brooklyn Bruce (shot put), and the 4x100-meter relay team of Ava Borah, Shaw, K. Czentnar and Robinson also qualified for the sectionals meet.
For the boys, Bradyen Bejin finished third in the 110-meter hurdles to qualify for sectionals, while Peyton Scott finished fourth in shot put and Jacob Coombs third in the 400-meter run. The 4x100-meter relay team of Coombs, Giovany Bradley, Bryson Layson and Malachi Thomas also qualified for sectionals following a third-place finish in the region.
